Royal Icing


Ingredients:                                               


  • 1 egg white
  • 3 drops lemon juice 
  • 175g (330ml) icing sugar, sifted
  • coloring and flavoring (optional)

 

Method:


  • Mix egg white and lemon juice in a bowl.

  • Add sifted icing sugar in spoonful and mix until icing holds its shape.

  • Color and/or flavor if desired.

  • Seal bowl tightly until needed or the icing will dry out.

 

Butter Icing


Ingredients:


  • 100g (125ml) butter or margarine
  • 250g (500ml) icing sugar
  • 10ml vanilla essence
  • A little milk

Method:


  • Cream butter or margarine with icing sugar.

  • Flavor with vanilla essence and add a little milk until soft icing consistency is reached.



Preschool Edible Crafts 1 -Biscuit Faces

Requirements:


  • Royal icing (see above)
  • Pink essence
  • Coloring
  • Round biscuit

 

Method:


  • Prepare the royal icing, adding a little pink essence and coloring.

  • Spread on the round biscuits

  • Decorate as desired.

  • See photograph.

 


 

Airplane

Requirements:


  • Finger biscuits
  • Wafers
  • Royal icing (see above)
  • M&m's or smarties

 

Method:


  • Use the whole finger biscuit and half a wafer.

  • With royal icing stick the wafer crosswise to the finger biscuit to form the airplane's wings.

  • Stick on a triangle from another wafer for the tailpiece.

  • Decorate with M&M's or smarties.




Preschool Edible Crafts 3 - Racing car

Requirements:


  • Finger biscuit
  • M&M's or smarties
  • Royal icing
  • Jelly baby
  • Silver balls

Method:


  • Take a finger biscuit and stick on four M&M's or smarties with royal icing to form the wheels (any other round, hard sweets can also be used)

  • Stick a jelly baby on the biscuit, standing it upright.

  • Write a number on the car with a piping tube.

  • Use two silver balls for the lights at the front.


Beetle

Requirements:


  • Cupcake
  • Butter icing (see above)
  • Smarties or M&M's
  • Licorice

Method:


  • Spread the cupcake with dark pink or red butter icing.

  • Make spots with brown icing or using brown M&M's or smarties.

  • Use strips of licorice for the feelers.

Lollipop Faces


Requirements:


  • Lollipops
  • Stiff paper
  • Glue

Method:


  • Use a variety of lollipops.

  • Draw faces on stiff paper and cut out.

  • Get the children to color and decorate them.

  • Leave the wrapping on then lollipops and glue on the faces.

  • Decorate further with bows, etc.

Spiders


Materials:


  • Round biscuits
  • Icing sugar and a little boiling water
  • Food coloring 
  • Smarties or M&M's
  • Thin licorice strips
  • Butter knife
  • Piece of cardboard

Method:


  • Place the round biscuit on the piece of cardboard. This is their working surface and a place to write their name.

  • Mix some icing sugar and a little boiling water into a glass bowl.

  • Add some food coloring to the icing.

  • Cut the licorice into different lengths. This is to be used for the spiders legs.

  • Using the butter knife, cover the biscuit with the icing.

  • Let the children make their own face and add the 8 licorice pieces for the legs.
