Crafts From Ties

These crafts from ties are loads of fun and quite simple to make. Why not try your hand at a scarecrow or a snake? Come take a look.

Scarecrow

Materials:

  • One old necktie
  • Scraps of wool (yellow or tan) or raffia.
  • An old pair of nylons
  • Two tongue depressors or sticks
  • Use string, tape, or twist ties to tie the two tongue depressors  (or sticks) together.
  • Markers
  • Stuffing (rags, cotton, or batting)

Method:

  • Tie the two tongue depressors or sticks together in the form of a cross.

  • Take the tie and cut about 15" {37 1/2 cm.} from it (not the widest part). You can see from the photo about how much of the tie you need.

  • Fold the tie in half and snip an X in the middle of it.

  • Take raffia and cut it long enough to hang out of the "sleeves"   and tape it or use twist ties to fasten it to the arms. I found it   worked best to tape the raffia in a bunch and then use a twist   tie to fasten it to the arms.

  • Snip any extra long ends of the raffia.

  • Push the top of the cross through the X. The tie now looks like   clothing over your cross.

  • Take the toe of the nylon and stuff it with stuffing so it looks like a proportionate head to the rest of the body.

  • Stick the top of the cross (neck) inside the head and tie with string or a twist tie.

  • Use markers to draw on a face and hair or

  • Glue some wool or raffia on for hair and let it dry.

  • Make a kerchief for him out of the tie or its lining and glue it on.

  • Trim the bottom of the tie clothing so it looks ragged.

  • Tape some raffia together and twist tie it to the tongue            depressor under his clothes to hang out the bottom.

  • Tie a string (or twist tie or piece of the nylon) around the body as a belt.
